STRATEGIC PLAN

VISION A healthy, thriving community of Native Hawaiian people.

MISSION To champion superior health care for all Native Hawaiians.

CORE VALUES
Kakou and pono. Collaboration and basic Hawaiian values provide the foundation upon which all goals, objectives and activities shall be planned and implemented.

OBJECTIVES & GOALS
Goals, objectives and activities shall be developed from the following categories: advocacy, education, community service and collaboration, and membership support services.

Advocacy
OBJECTIVE 1
Recommend to government bodies and private organizations concerning the health condition of Native Hawaiians

OBJECTIVE 2
Advocate for and collaborate with medical and community organizations whose purpose it is to improve Native Hawaiian health

OBJECTIVE 3
Assess and facilitate appropriate integration of western and traditional Hawaiian healing practices to improve Hawaiian health

OBJECTIVE 4
Promote appropriate research in Native Hawaiian communities, particularly by Native Hawaiian researchers



Education
OBJECTIVE 1
Promote students of all levels to take an interest in pursuing medicine for the purpose of improving the health of Native Hawaiians (recruitment)

GOAL 1.1
Increase by ____ participation of Native Hawaiian students in science fairs.

ACTIVITY 1.1.1
Sponsor a science fair for Native Hawaiian students considering the medical profession.

ACTIVITY 1.1.2
Encourage participation by membership as judges in science fairs.

ACTIVITY 1.1.3
Provide incentives or financial assistance to Native Hawaiian students who submit projects to a science fair

ACTIVITY 1.1.4
Provide technical assistance to Native Hawaiian students planning to submit projects to science fairs

GOAL 1.2
Increase by ___ the number of Native Hawaiians applying to medical school (UH JABSOM)

ACTIVITY 1.2.1
Survey for the health academy-type programs that serve Native Hawaiian high school students, such as Na Pua No‘eau, Wai‘anae Health Academy, Farrington Health Academy, NHCOE’s pre-med summer program

ACTIVITY 1.2.2
Participate as a resource or faculty at health academy-type programs for Native Hawaiian students

ACTIVITY 1.2.3
Provide technical assistance to students applying to medical school

ACTIVITY 1.2.4
Provide scholarships to students who are accepted in an accredited medical school

OBJECTIVE 2
Participate in mentoring programs that encourage, support and provide technical assistance and financial support to Native Hawaiian medical students

GOAL 2.1
Maintain at 0% the rate of medical school drop-out by Native Hawaiian students

ACTIVITY 2.1.1
Create and promote preceptorship opportunities with physicians of Native Hawaiian ancestry

ACTIVITY 2.1.2
Create and sponsor mentoring opportunities with the JABSOM Kauka Haumana, such as:
2.1.2.1. Regular brown bag, or picnic presentations featuring a different physician each time

2.1.3.2. Kauka/Haumana retreats, such as to Kalaupapa

GOAL 2.2
Provide financial assistance to _____ medical students of Hawaiian ancestry by ___ (year).

ACTIVITY 2.2.1
Explore fundraising and scholarship award criteria most appropriate for membership.

ACTIVITY 2.2.2
Initiate application process to become a scholarship program.

ACTIVITY 2.2.3
Convene Scholarship Committee to set policies and procedures for marketing, accepting applications, screening, and awarding scholarships.

OBJECTIVE 3
Participate in community and public activities that provide forums for health and wellness education

OBJECTIVE 4
Increase the number of physicians interested in improving the health of Native Hawaiians

GOAL 4.1
Increase the number of active (physicians of Native Hawaiian ancestry) members

GOAL 4.2
Increase the number of affiliate (Non-Hawaiian physicians who practice in Hawaiian communities, or have an ongoing interest in improving the health of Native Hawaiians) members

Community Service & Collaboration
OBJECTIVE 1
Develop a network of physicians for cross-referrals

OBJECTIVE 2
Develop and promote Speakers’ Bureau to community groups, health organizations, and other similar forums.

OBJECTIVE 3
Encourage participation in community health and wellness projects, such as:
a. Moloka‘i CRCs (cardiovascular risk clinics) on weekends
b. Statewide hospital CRC presentations, coordinated by various Kauka members, beginning Summer 2001
c. Civic Club screenings
d. Monthly Kaho‘olawe accesses
e. Kupuna Heart Health curriculum development

Membership Support
OBJECTIVE 1
Promote continuing support and education for membership

ACTIVITY 1.1
Provide a forum for exchange of ideas and information

ACTIVITY 1.2
Maintain and promote website www.kauka.org

ACTIVITY 1.3
Develop member liaisons an each island

ACTIVITY 1.4
Create, co-sponsor and promote continuing medical education programs.

ACTIVITY 1.5
Promote other continuing educational opportunities to membership via e-mail and other correspondence

ACTIVITY 1.6
To raise funds through participant fees, acceptance of gifts, legacies, grants, bequests, endowments and otherwise; to carry on activities related to fulfilling the purposes of the corporation
